BITTERSWEET AIN'T IT?

FUCK READING

Nobody wants to read any more, they just want to see.
Instead of a swim, the surface they would gladly skim.
Focus all too often on quotes instead of the message,
Knowledge lost when mere words assuaged

Superficial is now the norm, since being deep is clearly out of style
... and no longer in demand.
The learned and cultured now give way to fame's reprimands.
Labeled as dull and boring, lengthy and hefty.
Always looking for the skinny, the easy and flashing.
Forefathers rolling revolutions from their graves with teeth gnashing.

Nowadays, too easy to give hand clapping to a mere tongue lashing,
When really - it was all shit.
Every flowing verbiage but a second hand comment.
Devious in its purpose and merely calculated.
Yet still you gobble them up like a kid in a candy store.
No longer in search of depth, nor passion,
You just want more.
More, more, and then some more.
As long as desires are satisfied and satiated,
Quick to dismiss the wisdom held in the message

No longer casual observers,
Not even spectators or commentators.
Nothing but wolves, ready for the rape and pillage,
Masking in sheep's skin eager for the killing.
You say lets take the fat and eat our fill,
ignore the meat for it was too coarse to swallow, too tough to chew.
Throw its bones back to the earth from whence it came, we have no use

Wanted men - that's what we are, a hunt only for its hide.
The tough exterior it had put up all but a trophy on someone's bedside.
Or a bookshelf if we are fortuitous.
For our blood they will pay well for it,
they flash it around for it is a rarity.
Ironically,
Not a single word they understood in its entirety.
They read cause they can, they read to seem cultured.
They buy and appreciate because it is what is expected,
of scavengers, crows and vulture.
Never-the-less you are a necessary evil.
The anti-climactic end to all of my labors.
And to think that for all my years, I spilled my blood, sweat and tears
Only to have realized all of my fears.
To leave a legacy misunderstood,
My voice reduced to a whisper for no one to hear.
